Italian luxury hits the Royal Mile
July 2nd, 2009
The fashion and hotel industry’s ongoing ‘love-in’ continues with the recent launch of Hotel Missoni on the Royal Mile, Edinburgh. The first of a proposed international chain for Missoni, the Italian fashion house famed for it’s colourful fabrics and knitwear, Hotel Missoni, Edinburgh, is a visual onslaught of colour, vibrancy and retro chic that challenges the concept of tastefulness yet always manages to stay just on the right side of gaudy. Fine Italian food is available at the rather unimaginatively named ‘Cucina‘, whilst expensive cocktails are served and the even less imaginatively named, ‘Bar Missoni‘. Rather more imaginative however are the technology packed rooms with their signature Missoni zig-zags, stripes and bold colours and the modern, functional bathrooms with walk-in showers and predictably deluxe bathrobes.

Finding beauty in the ‘vehicles and scenes that have defined the evolution of the American landscape’, Kevin Cyr offers a refreshingly unique style that challenges modern societies fixation with symbols of wealth, status and success. Working from his Brooklyn base, Cyr paints derelict commercial vans, RVs, working vehicles and pretty much anything with rust, graffiti, or simply just old fashioned character, removing them from their existing context to create warm, inspiring, portrait-like paintings that document these vehicles and their place in American history.

Part art-project, part interiors product design, Dutch designer Bauke Knottnerus‘ Phat Knits are gigantic foam filled threads which are woven into otherworldly rugs and sofas that resemble offcuts from grandma jumpers and make you feel like a primordial dwarf living in the jolly green giant’s psychedelic mansion. Managing to be both bizarre yet maintaining a level of cutting edge fashion about his work, Knottnerus dabbles in the black art of Willy Wonka without ever coming across naff or tacky, if you’ve got the house to carry this sort of adventurous interior design off then Phat Knits would certainly prove a talking point for years to come.

The dawn of the online music player Spotify and it’s massive success has led to us spending a lot of time, that we should have been spending more constructively, sharing links to songs and playlists between friends, which in turn has given us the idea of presenting a regular weekend playlist. Each week we will put together a weekend soundtrack loosely, and we’ll stress the word loosely, based on a set theme which we want ideas for through our Twitter account. This week we were asked to put together a mix of 90s dance tracks, as you’ll see we didn’t strictly stay on track but the general theme is there, enjoy, and don’t forget to send us ideas for the weekend mixtape through Twitter, we’ve a feeling next week might be based on a certain music festival however.

Canadian woodworkers, SIDD, produce beautifully elegant handcrafted products with this stylish knife block being no exception to the rule. Built by a single craftsman in the space of a week from a single chunk of solid Walnut, with a Canadian Maple inlay, this is a rare addition to any kitchen space, contemporary or rustic. Signed and numbered by the artist, and at around 3o quid, we struggle to see how SIDD can be keeping up with demand. Need some new knives to show off, may we suggest keeping with the handmade theme and looking at Güde’s traditionally crafted knives. This family run outfit from the German town of Solingen produce the seriously sharp and equally striking ‘Olive’ collection with handles made from 200-year-old olive tree, we’re guessing the cost will counterbalance your bargain from Canada.

Fully assembled in Brooklyn, transported over the Williamsburg Bridge and hoisted into the Upper West Side sixth floor apartment of two art collectors, the ‘Genetic Stair’ by Brooklyn architects Caliper Studio is certainly one of a kind. Advanced digital fabrication techniques combined with traditional metalworking expertise, the staircase is the main feature of Caliper Studio’s renovation of this three thousand square foot duplex apartment. Free from all walls and supported only at the top and bottom, this is a unique design feature that oozes class and distinction thanks to it’s faultless design and restrained palette of polished stainless steel, white translucent Corian and low-iron glass.

The 16 new bands you should make the effort to catch at Glastonbury 2009
June 17th, 2009
7 days left until the world’s biggest music festival opens it’s gates once again, and with the press deriding this year’s lineup as ‘the most middle aged yet’, we thought we would buck the trend and showcase some of the hottest new bands, fresh from the hype machine, that are performing throughout the 4 days at this years event. With a stellar cast of headliners, none of which younger than 40, and a rather less stellar selection of supporting acts that feature Status Quo, Tom Jones and Rolf Harris, it’s been somewhat overlooked that there are exciting new acts in a abundance, not least the formidable talents of Florence and the Machine, Friendly Fires, Glasvegas and Gaslight Anthem. We wanted to dig a little further however and showcase some of the cracking new bands you may not have stumbled across yet, continue reading to see the 16 acts that we think you should see;

An abbreviation of Material Culture, MAT/CULT/ is the work of product designer Jonathan Sabine, a designer with a passion for iconic objects and social impact. His ‘Smuggling Plates’, a series of dinner plates adorned with goods which are commonly smuggled, perfectly summarise the nature of his work, challenging, political yet soaked with wry humour. His ‘Bourgeois Brass Knuckles’ bottle opener come knuckle duster is his most challenging yet playful work, whilst his ‘Beads’ hanging lamp series showcases his ability to create beautiful design objects that are not out of place on a Wallpaper* shoot.
